UNESCO, the United Nations Educations, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, has run afoul of United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley. UNESCO decided that the classification of the Tomb of the Patriarchs, a Jewish holy site, as an endangered Palestinian heritage site. As the Ambassador points out, this flies in the face of history. I think it’s important we fully review the importance of this UNESCO decision, which is a slap in the face to Israel. If there’s one thing with which we should all agree, it’s that revisionist history is dangerous. And along with that, the elimination of history is even worse.
As reported by The Algemeiner, “US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley condemned as an “affront to history” Friday’s decision by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to classify the Tomb of the Patriarchs — an ancient Jewish holy site in the West Bank city of Hebron — as an “endangered Palestinian World Heritage site.”
“The UNESCO vote on Hebron is tragic on several levels,” Haley stated, after UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee passed the resolution by 12 votes to three, with six abstentions, during its annual meeting in the Polish city of Krakow. “It undermines the trust that is needed for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process to be successful. And it further discredits an already highly questionable UN agency.”
“Today’s vote does no one any good and causes much harm,” Haley declared.
In 2011, in compliance with statutory funding restrictions, the US stopped funding UNESCO after it admitted the “State of Palestine” as a member state [however, we still allowed the opening of a diplomatic mission for the PLO in Washington DC]. While America is still on the 58-member UNESCO Executive Board, it no longer has voting rights in the UNESCO General Conference.
US Jewish organizations continued to react to the decision with severe criticism of UNESCO on Friday. “Today’s resolution on the Cave of the Patriarchs and Hebron disregarded the facts presented in a report by UNESCO’s own independent panel of experts and ignored their recommendation against adding them to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger at this time,” Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations Chairman Stephen M. Greenberg and Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Malcolm Hoenlein said in a joint statement. “By conducting the vote today in a secret ballot, the current chair of the committee and those member states who voted for the resolution clearly demonstrated they understood the shameful nature of their action.”
I went to Hebron, back in December 2009, and it was a tense situation, as the city actually went on lockdown while we were there. What this decision entails is what can only be ascertained as an attempt to erase Jewish history and Jewish existence. It’s no different from those who are Holocaust deniers.
The underlying danger with this decision by UNESCO is to delegitimize any historical existence of a Jewish state, or nation prior to the 1948 declaration. Furthermore, they’re acquiescing to the false assertion of the existence of a “Palestinian” people. We’ve explained before on these pages from whence the term “Palestine” emanated — it has nothing to do with Arabs. It does however have everything to do with the Jewish people and their insurrection against Rome, namely the Simon Bar Kokhba revolt and Emperor Hadrian’s decree.
However, when history is denied, dismissed and erased, then others can manipulate events, and revise history and terms for their own political and ideological advantage. What UNESCO has done is an affront to the Jewish people and to Israel, to say that the resting place of Abraham, Jacob (Israel), Isaac, Sarah, Rebecca, Eve, and Leah has anything to do with Arabs calling themselves “Palestinians” is absurd.
Consider this, from Genesis 32:28 (NIV), “Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” This was an Angel of God speaking with Jacob after he wrestled with the Angel.
Ok, so UNESCO is supposed to be about education and culture…and preserving historical sites? So what part of this do these stuck on stupid chuckleheads not get? There was an Israel first, and it came from a Jewish man, who is buried in the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
The term “Palestine” [Palaestinia] was introduced by a Roman Emperor in punishment of the Jewish people for revolting…and the root word of Palaestinia is Philistia. And folks, the ancient Philistines were Greek descendants, not Arab.
Here is the issue: when there is a blatant disregard for history, then it can be manipulated in any manner for an ideological agenda. And in this case, the goal of UNESCO, the United Nations, is to relegate Israel’s existence as modern, not historic, and erase its memory. Imperial Japan attempted the same in Korea during their occupation. And even here in the United States we are witnessing the destruction and removal of Civil War Confederate leaders all because of an ideological agenda. History doesn’t exist to be revised and altered for the sake of a current political movement, but this is exactly what’s happening.
Ya know what, I’d love to have a convention of black Christian pastors and ask them if they agree with the decision of UNESCO. Funny thing, most of these same pastors support and vote with the political party that agrees with the decision of UNESCO. Let me put it this way, what if UNESCO were to vote that the Tomb of George Washington, the Unknown Soldier, or even Ft McHenry were all “endangered British heritage sites?” As a matter of fact, who is UNESCO to make any determination about the historical sites of a sovereign nation?
Ahh, therein lies the real issue, the progressive socialist global body politic we call the United Nations doesn’t recognize national sovereignty — especially of those nations with whom it has an ideological angst, such as the UN does with the State of Israel. Let me warn the UN of another verse from the Holy Bible: Genesis 12:3 (NIV), “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
Like the ol’ preachers used to say down South, “your arms are too short to box with God.” So don’t screw around with His chosen people and roll snake eyes……..
